From Greg Mankiw’s blog regarding a Consumer Reports automobile report:
“Is it any surprise that Chrysler and GM are now in the process of going out of business? From the perspective of the Consumer Reports advice, it looks like their business model was to count on the ignorance of the buying public about the quality of their products. Their bankruptcy should perhaps be viewed as a success of the market system.”
What is the meaning of forgiveness? I can think of two: 1) you no longer hold bitterness in your heart against a person, yet you remain guarded in your relationship with him/her, and 2) you forgive a person with the intention of completely restoring a relationship.
It seems that when I am the one asking for forgiveness, I want the latter. When I am the one being asked to forgive, I want the former. Isn’t this selfish? [See Luke 6:37]
“Once you become a parent, for the rest of your life, you will never be happier than your unhappiest child.”
Quote from Tim Keller at the panel discussion at the 2009 Gospel Coalition National Conference.
A quote with which I can really identify from Walter Henegar taken via C.J. Mahaney’s article on Biblical Productivity:
“‘I procrastinate,’ he writes. ‘I’ve been doing it most of my life. If a particular task is even remotely unpleasant, my first and persistent tendency is to put it off. It’s not that I’m lazy; I’m actually very busy. I just wait as long as possible to do the really hard stuff. I always pull it off in the end, but it regularly makes me miserable.’”
When I interpret Scripture and I have the urge to be non-literal, I try to remember that I really have no reason to trust my own instincts. God is smarter than me. When I hear scripture criticized, I tend to ask why I should trust the person doing the criticizing and not the BIBLE.
Psalm 16:11 says:
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Think about that! If God is my highest pursuit, then I have full joy. Why then, is my utmost attention on myself 99.8% of the time?
Imagine saying this to your child:
“There is something i want you to do for me. I have some enemies that hate me and that deserve to perish, and I want you to go and die in their place, so that they can have eternal life.”
Whatever else you know about God, know that.
