I love Jesus Christ

John Piper wrote this today, and I want to echo each of these statements in my own life:

So here at the beginning of 2009, I join James Morgan in saying, “I love Jesus Christ.”

And as I say it, I want to make clear what I mean:

  • I admire Jesus Christ more than any other human or angelic being.
  • I enjoy his ways and his words more than I enjoy the ways and words of anyone else.
  • I want his approval more than I want the approval of anyone else.
  • I want to be with him more than I want to be with anyone else.
  • I feel more grateful to him for what he has done for me than I do to anyone else.
  • I trust his words more fully than I trust what anyone else says.
  • I am more glad in his exaltation than in the exaltation of anyone else, including me.

Change the premise

If a premise leads to a conclusion you know isn’t true then why not change the premise?

I stole this question from Tim Keller’s book, The Reason for God.

By grace through faith

A lot of times, I don’t just outright sin “intentionally.”  But there are some sinful things I do that are easily stoppable that I probably do just because I rely on grace.

Is grace just like a law of nature that we can rely on to be there for us tomorrow?  Yes!  But how does it glorify the name of God when I take advantage of His grace?

What do you need to know in order to live and die in the joy of this comfort?

Recently, I have benefited a ton from the Heidelberg Catechism, specifically the second question:

2. Q. What do you need to know in order to live and die in the joy of this comfort?

A. First, how great my sins and misery are;[1] second, how I am delivered from all my sins and misery;[2] third, how I am to be thankful to God for such deliverance.[3]

[1] Rom. 3:9, 10; I John 1:10. [2] John 17:3; Acts 4:12; 10:43. [3] Matt. 5:16; Rom. 6:13; Eph. 5:8-10; I Pet. 2:9, 10.

My wife and my friends lie to me

Last night, we went on the Polar Express train with Brice and Kristin.  Throughout the week leading up to last night, my wife had explained to me that we were all going to wear Christmas pajama pants on the train.  I even called Brice and asked him if he was, for sure, wearing pajama pants.  Of course, he told me he was.  So Brice and Kristin come to our house to pick us up, and I come out to see that I’m the only one wearing pajamas!  I had to rush to change into something reasonable.

The moral of the story is that you can’t trust your wife or your friends.  You can see Denae’s pictures of the train on her blog.

“Before Abraham” means before everything

What an incredible verse John 8:58 is:
“Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.’”

Lately, I’ve been interested in Scripture (particularly the Gospels) where Jesus is mentioned as God.  It doesn’t get clearer than this.

Read it in context here.

What’s Christmas All About?

The God of Isaiah 40 came to earth.  Through Him, our souls can be saved.  There’s no gift like that.

It’s a good thing, too, because my soul wouldn’t have fared too well on its own.
